Fire door release & BS 7273-4
A locked door on a fire escape route has to fail safely, released automatically by the fire alarm, not left for someone to override under pressure. We test every access-controlled door against your fire alarm interface as standard, not as an extra line item.
Visitor data & GDPR
A sign-in log of names, companies and contact details is personal data, with its own retention and access rules. We set retention periods, access permissions and export or erasure requests up correctly at install, the same groundwork covered in our Martyn’s Law readiness work.
Working with what’s already there
Most buildings already have CCTV, a fire panel, or an existing access system on at least one door. We integrate into it rather than running a second, disconnected system alongside, including the network and PoE infrastructure the readers themselves depend on.

Does our door entry system need to comply with fire regulations?
Yes, any electrically locked door on an escape route has to fail safe and release automatically on a fire alarm signal, which is what BS 7273-4 governs. We check this door by door against your fire strategy as part of the design, not after the system’s already fitted.
Is it legal to keep a visitor sign-in log with names and company details?
Yes, on the same basis as CCTV, collected for a clear purpose, kept secure and retained only as long as necessary, the standard the ICO expects under UK GDPR. A paper book left open on reception for every visitor to read is the usual problem we’re asked to fix, not whether logging visitors is allowed at all.
Do we need this if we’re not a large or “higher-risk” building?
There’s no single answer, a five-person office doesn’t need the same system as a managed multi-let building, which is exactly why we design around the building rather than selling one standard kit. It’s worth knowing that Martyn’s Law will apply a baseline duty to qualifying public-facing premises expecting 200 or more people once it’s in force, so it’s worth checking now rather than retrofitting later.
