EDLA certified: a genuinely useful acronym, if you know what it actually means

What EDLA actually stands for

EDLA stands for Enterprise Devices Licensing Agreement — it’s Google’s certification programme for large-format Android devices, not an education-specific award as the name is sometimes assumed to mean. An EDLA-certified interactive panel has been through Google’s compatibility testing to run Android properly at large screen sizes.

Why it matters specifically for schools

For any school already running Google Workspace for Education, an EDLA-certified panel gives native access to Drive, Classroom, Docs, Slides and the Play Store directly from the screen — no separate laptop needed to open a lesson. It also means automatic Google security updates and Google Play Protect built in, rather than relying on a manufacturer’s own, often slower, patch cycle.

For schools not standardised on Google Workspace, EDLA certification is far less relevant — it’s a Google-ecosystem benefit specifically, not a general quality mark.

What it doesn’t tell you

EDLA certification says nothing about touch accuracy, brightness, audio quality or build durability — the things that actually determine whether a panel survives daily classroom use. Treat it as one useful filter among several, not the only spec that matters.
